The largest gull in the world, an imposing and powerful predator with a massive bill and very dark "black" back. It dominates other gulls and is a formidable scavenger and hunter.
Where to spot
Widespread along the Atlantic coasts of North America and Europe, breeding from the Arctic southwards. Found in coastal areas, estuaries, harbors, and sometimes large inland lakes and rivers, particularly in winter.
How to spot
Identify by its immense size, powerful build, massive yellow bill with a red spot, and very dark slate-grey to black back and upperwings. Look for pinkish legs.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round throughout its range. Breeding season is from spring to early summer.
