Spotted
The Grey Noddy, also known as the White-capped Noddy, is a distinctive seabird with pale grey plumage, a white cap, and black lores. It is a graceful flyer, often found in tropical and subtropical oceanic environments. This species nests colonially on remote islands.
Where to spot
Found in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly around tropical and subtropical islands. Main populations are around Easter Island, Pitcairn, and islands of French Polynesia.
How to spot
Look for its pale grey body, contrasting white cap, black lores extending to the bill, and dark flight feathers. Observe its buoyant flight over open ocean, often dipping to seize small fish or squid from the surface. Scan island cliffs and trees for nesting colonies.
When to spot
Year-round resident in its island habitats. Breeding season varies by location but often occurs during warmer months. Best observed during daylight hours, either flying offshore or at their nesting sites.
