Spotted
One of the largest and most impressive gulls, known for its massive size, powerful flight, and a striking black hood in breeding plumage. It's often found on large inland lakes and coasts.
Where to spot
Breeds across the steppes and semi-deserts of Central Asia, particularly around large saline and freshwater lakes. Winters mainly along the coasts of the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, and East Asia.
How to spot
Look for its enormous size, broad wings, and powerful flight. In breeding plumage, the solid black hood is prominent. In winter, the head becomes mostly white with dark streaking around the eye and nape.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring to summer) in its Central Asian range, or during migration and wintering periods along Asian coasts and large lakes.
