Spotted
The Golden Pheasant is one of the world's most recognizable and ornamental pheasants, native to China. Males are famed for their spectacular and vibrant plumage, including a prominent golden crest and ruff.
Where to spot
In the wild, it inhabits dense forests, particularly bamboo thickets and broadleaved forests, in mountainous regions of central and western China. Also widely kept in captivity globally.
How to spot
Highly elusive in the wild. Focus on quiet forest areas with dense cover and listen for rustling in the undergrowth. Captive birds in aviaries and zoos are much easier to observe and identify.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active at dawn and dusk. The best time for wild observations is during the spring breeding season when males are more visible.
