Spotted
The Little Pied Cormorant is a common and widespread small cormorant found in Australasia. It is easily recognized by its contrasting black upperparts and pure white underparts, living in both freshwater and coastal environments.
Where to spot
Widespread throughout Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and various Pacific islands. Inhabits freshwater lakes, rivers, swamps, and coastal estuaries and sheltered bays.
How to spot
Look for its small size, black upperparts, and clean white underparts (pied morph). Its short, hooked bill is characteristic. Often seen perching on logs or rocks, or swimming with its body low in the water, pursuing fish. They also perform the classic cormorant wing-drying posture.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident range. Active throughout the day, often seen fishing or drying its wings.
