The Saxaul Sparrow is a specialized sparrow species found in the arid and semi-arid regions of Central Asia. It is closely associated with saxaul trees, which provide both food and nesting sites.
Where to spot
Central Asia, including parts of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and China, primarily in deserts and semi-deserts dominated by saxaul (Haloxylon) trees.
How to spot
Look for it near saxaul bushes and trees. It often forages on the ground but will perch in the trees. Listen for its distinctive sparrow-like chirps.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during breeding season (spring/early summer) when more active and vocal around nesting sites.
