Spotted
The Daurian Partridge is a medium-sized partridge found across the grasslands and steppes of Central and East Asia, closely resembling the Grey Partridge but with distinct plumage features.
Where to spot
Widespread across steppes, grasslands, cultivated fields, and open scrublands throughout Central Asia, from Russia and Kazakhstan east to Mongolia and northern China.
How to spot
Look for coveys foraging in open fields or at the edges of cover. They typically flush with a strong, whirring flight when disturbed. Learn their calls, which include various chuckles and whistles, as they are often heard before seen.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed at dawn and dusk when they are most active. They can be easier to spot in winter when snow cover reduces available foraging areas and concentrates them.

Outside the breeding season, Daurian Partridges often form large coveys, sometimes numbering over a hundred individuals, which helps them survive harsh winters and locate food.
