Spotted
A medium-sized grouse inhabiting subarctic and boreal regions, the Willow Ptarmigan is famous for its seasonal plumage changes, turning largely white in winter and mottled brown in summer. Males have distinctive red combs during breeding season.
Where to spot
Tundra, willow thickets, and boreal forest edges across circumpolar regions of North America, Europe, and Asia.
How to spot
Scan open tundra or shrubby areas, particularly near willow groves. Look for movement. Listen for their distinctive, cackling "go-back, go-back" calls, especially in spring. During winter, look for subtle shapes against snow.
When to spot
Year-round. Most easily spotted in spring when males are displaying with prominent red combs, or in late fall/early winter when partially changing to white plumage.

This species undergoes three plumage molts each year to adapt its camouflage to the changing seasons, an intensive process that helps it evade predators in snow-covered landscapes and summer shrublands.
