Spotted
The Venezuelan Swift is a rather enigmatic swift species, typically found in specific regions of South America. It is a dark, streamlined bird, perfectly adapted for life on the wing, tirelessly pursuing aerial insects.
Where to spot
Primarily found in northern South America, particularly in Venezuela and adjacent areas, favoring montane forests, cloud forests, and their edges, often at higher elevations.
How to spot
Look for a uniformly dark swift with a relatively short, square tail. Its flight is fast and direct, typical of Chaetura swifts. Observation often requires scanning the sky above forested valleys or ridgelines. Listening for any distinct calls can be helpful.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, especially during periods of high insect abundance. As a resident species in its tropical range, it can be observed year-round.
Due to its often localized and sometimes elusive nature, much about the specific ecology and breeding habits of the Venezuelan Swift remains less studied compared to more widespread swift species.
