Spotted
The Common Redstart is a colorful migratory passerine, with the male easily recognized by its bright orange-red breast, black face, and constantly trembling rufous tail. It typically inhabits open woodlands and gardens.
Where to spot
Breeds across most of Europe and temperate Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Found in open deciduous and mixed forests, orchards, parks, and large gardens.
How to spot
Look for them perching on exposed branches or low vegetation, frequently flicking their vibrant orange tail. Listen for the male's characteristic soft, melancholic song. Females are browner with a similar rufous tail.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season from May to August. Also frequently seen during spring migration (April-May) and autumn migration (August-October).

Males will often wag their tail side-to-side, especially when agitated or displaying, which serves as both a warning signal to rivals and an attractant to females.
