Spotted
The Cinereous Vulture, also known as the Eurasian Black Vulture, is one of the largest and heaviest raptors in the world. It boasts dark plumage, an enormous bill, and a formidable appearance. This powerful scavenger plays a crucial role in its ecosystem.
Where to spot
Found in fragmented populations across southern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of East Asia, particularly in mountainous and hilly regions with open woodlands or scrub. They often nest in trees rather than cliffs.
How to spot
Look for its massive size, uniformly dark brown plumage (appearing black), and very broad, rectangular wings in flight. The head appears relatively small with a dark ruff. They soar with flat wings and a short, wedge-shaped tail.
When to spot
These vultures are largely resident throughout their range. They are active during daylight hours, making them observable whenever weather conditions allow for soaring (mid-morning to late afternoon).

The Cinereous Vulture has an exceptionally strong bill, allowing it to tear through tough hides and muscle, accessing parts of carcasses that other vultures might struggle with. They often dominate feeding sites.
