The Pacific Baza is a widespread and common raptor across Australasia, known for its distinctive crested head and large yellow eyes. It is an agile hunter of large insects, particularly stick insects, and small vertebrates.

Forests, woodlands, and suburban gardens across Australia (primarily eastern and northern), New Guinea, and adjacent islands.
How to spot
Look for its grey head with a prominent crest, brown upperparts, and white underparts with rufous barring. Often seen soaring high, or perched inconspicuously within tree canopies, sometimes hanging upside down while foraging.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. More easily seen during breeding season when they are more vocal and conspicuous.
