Spotted
The Black-tailed Gull is a medium to large gull of East Asia, recognized by its dark grey mantle and, uniquely among 'white-headed' gulls, a distinct black band on its tail.
Where to spot
Breeds along the coasts of East Asia, primarily Japan, Korea, and China. Winters in coastal areas within the same region, sometimes dispersing further south.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey mantle and, most distinctly, the broad black band on its tail, especially visible in flight. Its yellow bill with a red and black tip is also a good field mark.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident coastal range. Breeding occurs from spring to summer.

This gull is a popular sight in coastal areas of Japan, where it is often seen in large flocks, particularly in fishing harbors, sometimes following ferries.
