Spotted
The River Tern is a medium-sized tern found in freshwater habitats across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its pale grey upperparts, white underparts, and a bright yellow bill (breeding plumage). This species is an adept diver, primarily feeding on fish.
Where to spot
Found across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, including India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indochina. Inhabits large rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, especially those with exposed sandbars.
How to spot
Look for its pale grey upperparts, white underparts, and in breeding plumage, a bright yellow bill and black cap. Observe its hovering flight before plunge-diving for fish. Scan sandbars and islands for resting or nesting colonies.
When to spot
Resident year-round in much of its range, with local movements tied to water levels. Breeding typically occurs during the dry season (March-May) when river sandbars are exposed. Best observed during daylight hours along rivers and large water bodies.

Unlike many terns that prefer coastal or oceanic environments, the River Tern is almost exclusively found in large freshwater river systems and lakes.
