Where to spot
Primarily a North American species, breeding widely across Canada and the northern USA. Winters extensively across the USA, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Occasionally seen in Europe as a vagrant. Found near coasts, large lakes, rivers, agricultural fields, and urban areas.
How to spot
The most distinctive feature is the prominent black ring around its yellow bill. Also look for yellow-green legs and relatively pale gray upperparts with black wingtips.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in much of its wintering range. Breeding occurs from spring to summer in northern areas.
