Spotted
The Greater Crested Tern, also known as the Swift Tern, is a large and widespread seabird with a prominent black shaggy crest and a robust yellow bill. It is a common sight along tropical and subtropical coastlines, often forming large, noisy colonies. This species is an expert plunge-diver.
Where to spot
Widespread across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Australia, Southeast Asia, and islands of the western Pacific. Inhabits sandy beaches, coral reefs, and offshore islands.
How to spot
Look for its large size, shaggy black crest (often reduced in non-breeding), sturdy yellow bill, grey upperparts, and white underparts. Observe its powerful flight and dramatic plunge-dives for fish from a height. Listen for its loud, grating calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in much of its range. Breeding occurs at various times depending on the location, often tied to local conditions. Best observed during daylight hours along coastlines or near breeding colonies.
