Look for its large size, entirely dark sooty-brown plumage with a slightly paler face, and a heavy bill. Its flight is strong, deep-winged, and arcing. Best observed on pelagic trips in the South Atlantic, especially around the Tristan da Cunha archipelago.

Breeding season is from October to May. Can be observed at sea throughout the year in the South Atlantic, often further north during the non-breeding season.
