The Atlantic Petrel is a large, dark-plumaged gadfly petrel breeding on Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island in the South Atlantic. It is a vulnerable species.
Where to spot
Breeds on Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Forages widely across the temperate and subtropical South Atlantic, reaching Brazil and South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its large size, entirely dark sooty-brown plumage with a slightly paler face, and a heavy bill. Its flight is strong, deep-winged, and arcing. Best observed on pelagic trips in the South Atlantic, especially around the Tristan da Cunha archipelago.
When to spot
Breeding season is from October to May. Can be observed at sea throughout the year in the South Atlantic, often further north during the non-breeding season.

This species has a distinctive, complex flight pattern that includes high, swooping arcs and rapid glides, making it one of the most acrobatic of the larger gadfly petrels.
