Spotted
The Herald Petrel is a medium-sized gadfly petrel with variable plumage morphs, found across the tropical Pacific Ocean. It is a highly pelagic species known for its agile flight.
Where to spot
Widespread across the tropical Pacific Ocean, breeding on numerous remote islands and atolls from the Marquesas to the Coral Sea. Disperses widely across the Pacific.
How to spot
Look for its variable plumage, dark M-pattern across the upperwing, and strong, dynamic flight with high arcs. Identification often relies on distinguishing between the various morphs and careful observation of flight style. Best seen on pelagic trips in the tropical Pacific.
When to spot
Breeding seasons vary by colony location but occur year-round in tropical regions. Can be observed at sea throughout the year.
Like its close relative, the Trindade Petrel, the Herald Petrel exhibits significant plumage variation, ranging from dark to light morphs, which can make field identification complex.
