Spotted
A poorly known species of swift from South America, characterized by its dark plumage and a distinctive white hindcollar. It inhabits high-altitude Andean environments.
Where to spot
Found in the Andes of southern Peru and Bolivia, often in high-altitude areas over montane forests and open country. Observations are often sporadic.
How to spot
Look for a dark swift with a noticeable white hindcollar, which may be difficult to see at a distance. Its flight is powerful and direct, and it often occurs singly or in small, loose groups.
When to spot
Observations are infrequent, but generally possible year-round within its known distribution. Best chances are during active foraging periods in daylight.
This swift is considered one of the least studied species in its family, with much of its life history, including its specific breeding sites, remaining unknown to science.
