Spotted
The Grey-rumped Swift is a widespread Neotropical swift species recognized by its dark plumage, often with a subtle grayish wash on the rump. These aerial insectivores are a common sight darting through the skies of their diverse habitats.
Where to spot
Found throughout Central and South America, from southern Mexico south to northern Argentina. Inhabits a wide variety of open and semi-open habitats, including forests, woodlands, savannas, and urban areas.
How to spot
Identify by its streamlined body, short square tail, and rapid, agile flight. Look for the subtle grayish rump patch, which can be hard to see against the dark body. Listen for their characteristic high-pitched chirps and chattering calls while in flight.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, with peak foraging activity in the early morning and late afternoon. They are resident in most parts of their range, observable year-round.
