Spotted
The Wonga Pigeon is a large, striking ground-dwelling pigeon native to the rainforests and wet eucalypt forests of eastern Australia. It is characterized by its bold black-and-white facial markings and a distinctive "wonga-wonga" call.
Where to spot
Found along the eastern coast of Australia, from central Queensland south through New South Wales to eastern Victoria, inhabiting rainforests, wet eucalypt forests, and dense coastal scrub.
How to spot
Look for its plump body, grey upperparts, and prominent white "V" shape on its breast and striking black-and-white facial markings. It is often heard before it is seen, so listen for its diagnostic call. They tend to walk rather than fly when disturbed.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, typically foraging on the forest floor. Most vocal in the early morning and late afternoon.

The Wonga Pigeon's call, a loud and resonant "wonga-wonga-wonga," is highly distinctive and gives the bird its common name, often echoing through the dense forest undergrowth.
