A medium-sized dove endemic to Madagascar and surrounding islands. It is characterized by its reddish-brown plumage, pale underparts, and distinctive black and white spotted patch on the neck side.
Where to spot
Madagascar, the Comoro Islands (Grande Comore, Anjouan, Mohéli), Mayotte, and Glorioso Islands. Found in forests, woodlands, agricultural land, scrub, and gardens from coastal to montane areas.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground, often in pairs or small groups, particularly near trees or shrubs. Its distinctive cooing call, a series of soft 'coo-coo-COO-coo-coo' notes, is a good identifier.
