Where to spot
Central America, from southern Mexico south through Costa Rica and Panama, and into western South America (Colombia, Ecuador). Inhabits humid lowland evergreen forests and tall secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, low, booming call, often a series of 'whoo-WUH-WUH-whooo' notes, which is its most reliable identifier. Look for it perched motionlessly in the mid to upper canopy, often obscured by foliage.

Year-round within its range. Most vocal during early morning and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season.

Despite its widespread distribution, the Short-billed Pigeon often remains hidden, perching quietly within the dense canopy, making it more often heard through its booming call than clearly seen.
