The Taiwan Laughingthrush is a striking and endemic babbler to the island of Taiwan. It is characterized by its rufous-brown plumage, grey head, and bold facial markings including a dark ear patch and white supercilium.
Where to spot
Endemic to Taiwan. Inhabits montane evergreen forests, often in dense undergrowth, bamboo thickets, and along forest edges at moderate to high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and distinctive whistling calls. Look for it foraging actively in the understory or on the forest floor. Its rufous body, grey head, and prominent black ear patch are key identification features.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, particularly during the breeding season (spring/summer).
