Spotted
The Black-eared Shrike-Babbler is a striking and active species found across Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its prominent black ear-coverts, yellow eye-ring, and stout, hooked bill, reflecting its predatory babbler nature.
Where to spot
Widespread across Southeast Asia, from the Himalayas to Indochina and parts of the Malay Peninsula. Inhabits montane evergreen forests and oak-rhododendron scrub, typically in the mid-story and canopy.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, ringing calls. Look for it perching upright on exposed branches, or actively gleaning. The black ear-coverts, yellow eye-ring, and stout bill are unmistakable identification features.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Often observed foraging in mixed-species flocks.
Despite its 'babbler' affiliation, this species has a shrike-like hunting style, often perching conspicuously to scan for large insects and small vertebrates.
