Spotted
The Bugun Liocichla is a critically endangered and remarkably striking species of babbler, only discovered in 2006 in Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is recognized by its vibrant plumage, including yellow, orange, and black, with a distinctive black cap.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very restricted area in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh, northeastern India. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, fluty, and melodious calls. Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity and habitat. Look for its bright colors if it briefly emerges from dense cover, particularly its yellow and orange wing patches.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning. Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted range.
This species was named after the Bugun tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, who helped protect its habitat. Its discovery by an astronomer highlights how new species can still be found in unexpected ways.
