Spotted
The Golden-winged Laughingthrush is a beautiful and secretive babbler found in the high-altitude forests of the eastern Himalayas and China. It is characterized by its dark plumage with prominent golden-yellow wing patches and an olive wash.
Where to spot
Ranges from the eastern Himalayas (northeastern India, Bhutan) through parts of Myanmar and southern China. Inhabits dense montane evergreen forests, particularly rhododendron and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its quiet, often repeated, hooting or whistling calls. Look for subtle movements in very dense foliage. The golden-yellow wing patches are the most definitive, albeit often hidden, identification feature.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Due to its shy nature, patience is required for observation.

Despite its striking wing patches, this species can be remarkably difficult to spot as it forages quietly in dense undergrowth, often only revealing its presence through soft calls.
