Spotted
The Fiji Petrel is a critically endangered and extremely rare dark petrel, known from only a handful of sightings in the South Pacific. It is one of the world's most enigmatic birds.
Where to spot
Known primarily from a few at-sea sightings near Gau Island, Fiji, and suspected to breed in the highland forests of Gau. Its range is extremely restricted.
How to spot
Identify by its medium size, entirely dark sooty-brown plumage, and a relatively long, slightly wedge-shaped tail. Its flight is swift and powerful. Due to its extreme rarity and nocturnal breeding habits, observation is exceptionally challenging and requires expert guidance and considerable luck on specialized expeditions to Fiji.
When to spot
Sightings are highly opportunistic and extremely rare, often occurring during the austral summer months. Requires immense luck and dedicated expeditions.

It was long thought extinct, with only one specimen collected in 1855, until its dramatic rediscovery in 1984, followed by a few more fleeting sightings, making it a true 'ghost' bird.
