Spotted
The Spot-winged Babbler is a distinctive ground-dwelling bird, named for the subtle pale spots on its wing feathers. It is a secretive resident of dense, damp forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Found in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. It inhabits lowland and hill evergreen forests, preferring dense undergrowth, bamboo, and often streamsides.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often explosive, 'pom-pom-pom-pom' calls. Look for a plain brownish bird moving quietly on the forest floor, and try to catch a glimpse of the subtle pale spots on its wings.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be challenging to see due to its skulking nature.
The small, pale spots on its wing coverts are a unique and often overlooked feature that contributes to its cryptic camouflage.
