The Puff-backed Babbler is a distinctive species named for its fluffy, somewhat erectile back feathers. It is a secretive but vocal inhabitant of dense lowland forests, often found in mixed-species flocks.

Found in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. It inhabits lowland primary and secondary evergreen forests, preferring dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Look for its unique puffy lower back and relatively plain brown plumage. It moves actively through dense vegetation, often in the mid-story. Listen for its distinctive, often abrupt and explosive, 'chit-chit-chit' calls.

Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often as part of bird waves.
