The Scaly-crowned Babbler is a distinctive species named for the dark scaling pattern on its crown. It is a relatively large and active babbler of the forest mid-story and undergrowth.
Where to spot
Found in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. It inhabits lowland and hill evergreen forests, preferring dense undergrowth, bamboo, and often streamsides.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive scaly crown and general brownish plumage. It moves actively through dense foliage, often at eye-level or slightly above. Listen for its short, whistled calls and chattering.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often as part of mixed-species foraging flocks.
The 'scaly' pattern on its crown is a unique and prominent feature, making it easily identifiable among other babbler species in its range.
