Spotted
The Sumatran Babbler is a secretive, ground-dwelling bird endemic to Sumatra, characterized by its plain brown plumage. It is a shy resident of dense lowland forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It inhabits lowland primary and secondary evergreen forests, preferring dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often explosive, 'pom-pom-pom-pom' calls, similar to a Puff-throated Babbler but often slightly different in tone depending on the subspecies. Look for a plain brown bird moving quietly on the forest floor.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be challenging to see due to its skulking nature.
This babbler is an expert at blending into the forest floor, relying on its cryptic coloration and quiet movements to avoid detection.
