Where to spot
Ranges from the Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, northeast India) through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. Inhabits montane forests, bamboo thickets, and dense scrub.
How to spot
Look for its distinct rufous or chestnut-colored head. Often found in noisy, active flocks, moving through dense vegetation. Listen for their varied, often chattering and metallic calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during the day. Often observed in spring and summer during the breeding season when vocalizations are more frequent.
