Primarily found in lowland rainforests, dense secondary growth, and swampy areas on New Guinea and several nearby islands such as Biak and Yapen, favouring thick undergrowth.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive large size and all-dark, iridescent violet-blue plumage. It typically skulks in dense undergrowth but may briefly perch in the open, especially when vocalizing. Listen for its deep, resonant 'booming' calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often heard calling in the early morning and late afternoon, and during its breeding season. It can be quite secretive.
