The Rufous-rumped Cuckoo is a distinctive ground-dwelling cuckoo found in Central America, easily identified by its vibrant rufous rump and unique foraging behavior. It is an insectivorous bird often seen running along paths and open areas.
Where to spot
Inhabits dry forests, scrublands, open woodlands, and plantations from western Mexico south through Central America to Costa Rica. It prefers areas with good ground cover but also open patches for foraging.
How to spot
Look for it running quickly across open ground or along trails and roadsides. While it can be quite bold when foraging, it will quickly dart into dense cover if startled. Listen for its low, hooting call, which can help in detection.

Year-round resident. Most active during the day, particularly in the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon when it forages for insects and small invertebrates.
