Spotted
Horsfield's Bronze Cuckoo is a widespread small cuckoo in Australasia, known for its iridescent bronzy-green upperparts and distinctive call. It is a migratory brood parasite in many parts of its range, relying on other birds to raise its young. It is a familiar spring arrival in many areas.
Where to spot
Found across Australia, New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. Inhabits open woodlands, scrublands, mallee, and suburban gardens, wherever suitable host birds are present.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, descending 'pee-peee-peee' whistle, which is very diagnostic and often heard before the bird is seen. Look for its small size and shimmering bronze-green plumage as it perches on wires or exposed branches.
When to spot
Most easily observed during the breeding season (spring/summer in Australia) when males are very vocal and active. Many populations migrate north for winter, becoming absent from temperate areas.

Horsfield's Bronze Cuckoo lays its eggs in the nests of various small passerines, including thornbills and fairywrens, often removing an existing egg from the host nest before laying its own.
