The Red-faced Malkoha is an unmistakable cuckoo species endemic to Sri Lanka, famous for its large, vibrant red facial patch that surrounds a pale eye. Its body plumage is predominantly dark with a long, graduated tail.
Where to spot
Endemic to the wet zone forests of Sri Lanka, particularly in the dense lowland rainforests and mature secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its bright red face contrasting with dark foliage. It can be found moving deliberately through the mid to upper canopy. Listen for its distinctive, low hooting call, often described as 'ko-ko-ko'.
When to spot
Best observed during daylight hours, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when it is actively foraging. It is a resident species, present year-round.
