Where to spot
Native to west-central Africa, ranging from Nigeria through Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Congo. It inhabits dense lowland rainforests and secondary growth.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic deep, bubbling hooting calls. Look for glimpses of its dark body and rufous wings as it moves through thick vegetation, typically near the ground or in low bushes. Patience is key to spotting this secretive bird.

Like all coucals, the Gabon Coucal is non-parasitic, building its own nest and raising its young. It is a shy bird, often remaining hidden in dense undergrowth, but its calls are a key to its presence.
