Spotted
The Lesser Coucal, also known as the Solomons Coucal, is a medium-sized coucal species native to the Solomon Islands. It is characterized by its glossy black plumage and chestnut wings, typical of many coucals.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Solomon Islands archipelago in Oceania, inhabiting dense lowland forests, secondary growth, and overgrown gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic bubbling or hooting call, which is often the first indication of its presence. Look for it skulking in dense vegetation or occasionally perching conspicuously on a low branch to sunbathe.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly audible with its calls during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its native range.

Unlike many cuckoos, coucals are non-brood parasitic, meaning they build their own nests and raise their young. The Lesser Coucal is quite vocal, often producing a distinctive series of bubbling hoots.
