Spotted
The Victoria Crowned Pigeon is arguably the most striking of the crowned pigeons, known for its deep blue plumage, maroon breast, and an extraordinary fan-like crest adorned with white tips. It is native to northern New Guinea and surrounding islands.
Where to spot
Inhabits lowland rainforests, sago palm swamps, and forested wetlands of northern New Guinea and several nearby islands, including Biak, Yapen, and Supiori. It prefers areas with dense ground cover.
How to spot
Search for these magnificent birds walking slowly on the forest floor, often in pairs or small groups. Despite their size, they can be surprisingly camouflaged in the dappled light. Listen for their distinctive deep, booming 'hoo-hoo-hoo' calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, foraging for fallen fruits, seeds, and small invertebrates on the forest floor. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when they are most active.
