Spotted
Living up to its name, the Goliath Imperial-Pigeon is one of the largest pigeons in the world, renowned for its impressive size and robust build. It is endemic to the forests of New Caledonia.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Caledonia. It is primarily found in mature rainforests, cloud forests, and sometimes even in degraded secondary forests, ranging from lowlands to mountain peaks.
How to spot
Its massive size is the primary identification feature; look for a very large, dark pigeon with relatively short legs and a powerful, ponderous flight. Its deep, resonant booming call is also highly distinctive and often heard before the bird is seen.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen perched conspicuously at the top of tall trees or flying with powerful, deep wingbeats. It is a resident species, observable year-round.

Its immense size enables it to consume very large fruits that few other birds can manage, making it a critical disperser of seeds for some of New Caledonia's largest native trees.
