Spotted
The Polynesian Ground Dove is a critically endangered species of ground dove from French Polynesia, surviving on only a few remote islands. It is one of the world's rarest birds.
Where to spot
Historically widespread across French Polynesia, including the Tuamotu Archipelago, Marquesas, and Society Islands. Now restricted to a few small, remote, and predator-free islets.
How to spot
This species is exceptionally difficult to observe. Any potential sightings would occur on highly protected and monitored islets within its last known range, requiring special permissions and extensive conservation efforts.
When to spot
Year-round, but observations are extremely rare and highly localized due to its critically endangered status and fragmented populations.
Once widespread across many Polynesian islands, its drastic decline serves as a stark reminder of the impact of introduced predators on vulnerable island species.
