The Tanna Fruit Dove is a unique and somewhat poorly known species of fruit dove, named for Tanna Island in Vanuatu. It is characterized by its largely green plumage with subtle color variations on its head and belly.
Where to spot
Endemic to Tanna and Anatom (Aneityum) islands in the Vanuatu archipelago. It inhabits tropical lowland forests and dense woodland, often found in mature forest patches.
How to spot
Search the middle to upper canopy of fruiting trees. Its green plumage provides good camouflage, so patience and keen observation are essential. Listen for any soft cooing calls that might betray its presence.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round on its native islands. Best seen when foraging for fruit, usually in the early morning or late afternoon when birds are most active.
