A widespread and variable pigeon species found across many islands in the South Pacific and parts of Southeast Asia. It is known for its iridescent plumage, especially on the back and wings.
Where to spot
Found on numerous islands across Southeast Asia (e.g., Philippines, Indonesia) and the South Pacific (e.g., New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Samoa).
How to spot
Look in a variety of forest types, from coastal to montane, as well as cultivated areas and gardens. Identify by its dark body, often paler head/neck, and iridescent back. Listen for its distinctive cooing calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen foraging in fruiting trees. Best observed during breeding season or when gathered at abundant food sources.
