Spotted
The Pied Imperial-Pigeon is a large, striking pigeon native to Australasia, distinguished by its predominantly white plumage with contrasting black flight feathers. These fruit-eating birds are crucial for seed dispersal in their forest and coastal island habitats.
Where to spot
Coastal forests, mangroves, and offshore islands of northern Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands.
How to spot
Look for their distinctive white body and black wingtips in the canopy of trees or flying between islands. Their deep, booming coos are also a good way to locate them.
When to spot
Year-round, with increased activity during breeding seasons. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon.
