A large, arboreal pigeon endemic to Sri Lanka, easily recognized by its checkerboard pattern on the hindneck. It prefers dense montane forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of Sri Lanka, particularly in the central highlands.
How to spot
Search in dense evergreen forests at higher elevations. Listen for its deep, booming call. Use binoculars to discern the unique neck pattern. They are often shy and keep to the canopy.
When to spot
Resident species, active throughout the year. Best observation times are typically early morning or late afternoon when foraging activity peaks.
The distinctive black and white 'checkerboard' pattern on its hindneck is unique among pigeons and serves as a key identification feature for this island endemic.
