Where to spot

Found in high Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, breeding on steep coastal cliffs. They winter in ice-free northern oceans, extending south to temperate waters.

How to spot

Look for its distinctly thicker bill compared to the Common Guillemot, and a diagnostic white stripe on the upper mandible in breeding adults. Observe them at their dense, noisy cliff colonies or diving expertly in the water.
