Where to spot
Breeds along the North Pacific Rim, from Alaska south to northern California, and across to Japan and Russia. Spends winters largely offshore in deep waters.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive plumage and large, colorful bill. Often seen near cliff-face nesting sites, diving for fish, or flying with rapid wingbeats low over the water, often carrying multiple fish in its bill.

Best seen from late spring through late summer when concentrated at breeding colonies on coastal islands and cliffs.
