Spotted
The Whiskered Auklet is a distinctive, small seabird of the North Pacific, instantly recognizable by the prominent white facial plumes or 'whiskers' on its head during the breeding season.
Where to spot
Breeds on rocky islands and cliffs in the Aleutian Islands and parts of the Russian Far East. Spends winters in offshore waters nearby.
How to spot
Look for its unique white facial plumes and red bill, which are unmistakable in breeding plumage. Often seen near rocky shorelines, diving for crustaceans in turbulent waters.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (late spring to late summer) near its island colonies. Can be seen at sea during other times.
