Spotted
The Least Auklet is the smallest of all auks, a diminutive seabird of the North Pacific, often found in immense colonies in sub-Arctic waters.
Where to spot
Breeds on islands in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, and parts of the Russian Far East. Winters in offshore waters nearby.
How to spot
Look for its extremely small size and rapid, buzzing flight. Often seen in large, dense flocks. Identification requires good views to pick out subtle head and bill features.
When to spot
Best seen during the breeding season (late spring to late summer) around colonies. Can be seen offshore year-round in productive northern waters.
Despite their tiny size, Least Auklets gather in colonies that can number in the millions, creating incredible spectacles in their Arctic breeding grounds, where their sheer numbers are astounding.
